Excise department destroys contraband worth INR 43 lakh

DIMAPUR — The office of the Commissioner of Excise and Prohibition on Tuesday destroyed seized liquor and drugs worth INR 43 lakh at the premises of its directorate in Dimapur.

The destruction was carried by a duly constituted Liquor/Drugs Destruction Board under relevant sections of the NLTP Act 1989/ NDPS Act 1985. The seized liquor was destroyed by crushing with excavator and drugs were destroyed by incineration, stated an update from the department.

The destroyed items consisted of 25,558 bottles of assorted liquor and beer, 2100 capsules of Spasmo Proxyvon and 821 gram of heroin.

The department added that an amount of INR 7 lakh was deposited as revenue realised from case compounding. It stated that 619 persons were arrested for liquor offences and 4 persons arrested in connection with drug cases.

The destruction programme was chaired by the Joint Commissioner of Excise (NC) and reports on the seized articles were read out by the Superintendents of Excise, Dimapur district, Mobile Squad and Narcotic Cell.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Excise, H Atokhe Aye, has commended the Excise enforcement personnel for the seizures made with limited man power and in difficult conditions. He further encouraged them to continue working with sincerity and diligence.

In another report, the Kohima Excise Special Task Force on October 18 raided a  hotel located at Old NST and apprehended one person identified as Laivini Thomas (24) for possessing 9 soap cases of suspected heroin weighing approximately 115 gram.

A case in this connection has been registered U/S 21 (b) of NDPS Act 1985.
