DGP Sharma calls policemen to renew pledge to secure, serve and sacrifice

KOHIMA — Nagaland Director General of Police (DGP), Rupin Sharma on Monday called upon the police in the state to renew their pledge to serve the people, to secure and maintain the integrity of the nation and make the supreme sacrifice when needed.

The police chief was addressing the Police Commemoration Day held at the Nagaland Police Headquarters (PHQ), Kohima.

Sharma recounted the inception of the Police Commemoration Day that dates back to a historical event, which changed the perception about the sacrifices made by policemen.

It may be recalled that on this day (October 21, 1959) a CRPF mobile patrolling party led by DCIO Karam Singh was ambushed in Chin of Ladakh by overwhelming numbers of Chinese troops.

Ten CRPF personnel were killed on spot and the rest were taken as prisoners. Subsequently the Chinese handed over the dead bodies of the deceased on November 13, 1959 and the valiant fallen were cremated at on  November 14 at Hot Springs, located at an altitude of 16000 feet in Ladakh, he said.

Subsequently, in 1960, the heads of police of all states of India in a conference decided to observe Oct. 21 every year as the ‘Police Commemoration Day’ throughout the country.

“On this day, we remember the sacrifice of all policemen who lay down their lives in the line of duty all over India during the preceding year,” he said.

The DGP informed that during the last year, 214 policemen all over India made the supreme sacrifice of laying down their precious lives in the line of duty while protecting the integrity and security of the country.

While highlighting that the occasion is commemorated to pay respects to the valiant police personnel, Sharma acknowledged the sacrifice and contribution of the four brave martyrs of Nagaland Police who sacrificed their lives under extenuating circumstances while fulfilling their duties.

He also acknowledged and appreciated the untiring efforts of every Nagaland Police personnel during the last year where they forwent the opportunities and occasions to enjoy festivals and occasions with their families.

The DGP said the Nagaland Police personnel, with extreme dedication and unflinching sense of duty, have ensured that everyone in the state can enjoy their lives with near and dear ones.

He also mentioned that the police also ensured peaceful conduct of two elections in the state and the Lok Sabha elections 2024, enduring extreme heat and rendering vigilant service, which was appreciated by the public in general.

Additionally, Sharma reminded the gathering that the occasion is not a mere day of mourning but a day of celebrating the spirit of selfless sacrifice of the police men and women who have become immortal through their deeds.

The list of police personnel who sacrificed their lives during the line of duty were read out on the occasion. The list includes Hav. A Nikiye Tsuipu of 10th NAP (IR) Bn. Zhadima; Constable (GD) Wethelhou Losou, 10th NAP (IR) Bn. Zhadima; Constable (GD) Akangluba, 10th NAP (IR) Bn. Zhadima and Contable (Driver) Khetopu Awomi, 14th NAP (IR) Bn. Kiphire.

The officers led by the DGP paid their homage and respect to the fallen heroes by laying wreaths at the cenotaph, alongwith the dog squad.

DEF Wokha observes Police Commemoration Day

The District Enforcement Force (DEF) Wokha observed Police Commemoration Day at SP Office, Wokha.

Superintendent of Police, Wokha, Aotula T Imchen, who delivered the commemoration message, said that the day is observed as Martyr’s Day by all police and paramilitary forces across India, a DIPR report stated.

Imchen said that it is a solemn day to remember the martyrs who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty and in defending the country.

She appealed the police personnel and officers to be disciplined, courageous and dedicated while performing their duties.

She further encouraged them to get inspiration from the sacrifices of the martyrs and move forward with devotion, dedication and sense of responsibility while serving the society.

Addl. SP of Wokha, K Soriso read out the list of police martyrs, which was followed by laying of wreaths led by SP Wokha and other ranks of DEF Wokha.
