Heavy rainfall expected in Northeast, IMD issues orange alert

DIMAPUR — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Northeast states, including Nagaland, predicting very heavy rainfall in the coming days.

In a forecast issued on Thursday, the IMD stated that fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall were very likely in the Northeast region during the week.

“Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on October 3 and 4.

“Widespread light to moderate rainfall very likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during next 2 days and scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall during the next subsequent 5 days; scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall very likely Gangetic West Bengal; isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall over the remaining region during the week,” the forecast stated.

According to the IMD, a cyclonic circulation lies over southeast Bangladesh and its neighbourhood, and a trough runs from this cyclonic circulation to the north Andaman Sea across the Myanmar coast in lower tropospheric levels.

It informed that a low-pressure area will likely form over the North Bay of Bengal and the neighbourhood around October 4 under its influence due to which isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over the Northeast region.
