DIMAPUR — NorthEast United FC, the reigning Durand Cup winners, will play at their home ground, Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Guwahati, for the first time this season when they host Kerala Blasters FC on Sunday.

The Highlanders will look to bounce back from a late 2-3 defeat against Mohun Bagan in their last match. In their season opener, the Highlanders defeated newcomers Mohammedan SC 1-0 away.

On the other hand, the Kerala Blasters also had a mixed start to their season after two home games. Mikael Stahre’s team lost to Punjab FC 1-2 before winning against East Bengal FC by the same margin.

In a press statement, Juan Pedro Benali, head coach of NorthEast United FC, expressed that the team is eager to play their first home game and expects it to be a difficult match. He noted that all the games they have played so far have been away, mentioning their matches in Kokrajhar, Shillong, and Kolkata. He added that it’s a great feeling.

Hamza Regragui, who missed the last game due to illness, feels prepared for the challenges of the ISL. He mentioned that he feels positive and appreciated the supportive environment within the team, describing it as a big family.

Regragui highlighted that they are training hard every day and are fully focused on the upcoming challenges.

The last time NorthEast United FC faced Kerala at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in the ISL, goals from Nestor Albiach and Jithin MS secured a 2-0 victory for the Highlanders over the visitors.
