Nagaland launches first electric tourist bus in push for green tourism

DIMAPUR — In a step towards sustainable tourism, Nagaland launched its first air-conditioned electric tourist bus on Friday at the Circuit House in Dimapur.

The 14-seater vehicle, equipped with GPS and PA systems, was launched by K Tokugha Sukhalu, Advisor for Food and Civil Supply, Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection.

This initiative is taken up by Greenland Nagaland, an affiliate organisation, to augment strength and resources of the state Ministry of Tourism. By November 27, the state plans to roll out 15 more electric buses, ensuring each district has a dedicated vehicle for tourists, especially during the Hornbill Festival. These eco-friendly buses will continue to operate as part of the state’s tourism transport network even after the festival.

It was informed that each electric bus across the 16 districts will be managed and operated by entrepreneurs who are members of Greenland Nagaland. These entrepreneurs will receive support through the PM MSME Grants scheme.

Swaraj Mukherjee, Secretary of Greenland Nagaland, shared their vision for future projects, including electric buses with larger seating capacities and onboard toilet facilities. While the current model is exclusively for tourists, he said that electric vehicles for public transport would also be introduced.

He said that the organisation is looking for MSME entrepreneurs from each district to operate these electric buses, and capitalise on government financing schemes. Each electric bus typically costs around INR 25 lakh, but due to his contributions to the design process, they were able to procure it for INR 20 lakh, with funding from Greenland Nagaland.

According to the Treasurer of Greenland Nagaland, a fully charged electric bus can cover a distance of 140 km and travel at a speed of 50 km/hour. A full charge takes approximately 4-5 hours.

State govt. will deliver — Sukhalu

Speaking at the launch, Advisor Sukhalu noted the ongoing changes in Nagaland and urged the public to remain patient as the state government will deliver. He reassured citizens that the government is committed to ensuring proper development and infrastructure, aiming to provide the same level of transport ease and comfort enjoyed in other regions to every family in Nagaland.

He also stressed the urgency of environmental protection, highlighting the detrimental impact of older vehicles on the state’s air quality.

Sukhalu also mentioned the government’s proposal to acquire buses for public transport during the Hornbill Festival to combat traffic congestion. He noted the positive growth in tourism, albeit concentrated in certain areas, and expressed confidence in the state’s growing popularity as a travel destination amongst mainland Indians.

Meanwhile, Longri Jamir, President of Greenland Nagaland, emphasised the tourism potential of the state and the need to develop tourism-based resources. He advocated for a green culture, stating that it would elevate Nagaland’s status as an attractive investment destination.
