Nagaland State Taekwondo Championship: DYRS is overall champion

KOHIMA — The Directorate of Youth Resources and Sports (DYRS) at Indira Gandhi Academy, Kohima, emerged as the overall winner of the 34th Nagaland State Taekwondo Championship, securing 18 gold, 6 silver, and 1 bronze medal.

The championship was organised by the Nagaland Taekwondo Association (NTA) in collaboration with the Youth Resources and Sports department at Town Hall, Phek Town, and hosted by the Phek District Taekwondo Association (PDTA).

Dimapur took the runners-up position with a tally of 15 gold, 9 silver, and 18 bronze medals. Meanwhile, the Wokha team, which won 3 gold, 7 silver, and 13 bronze medals, was recognised as the best disciplined team.

Deputy Commissioner of Phek and Member Secretary of the Phek District Olympic Association, John Tsulise Sangtam, attended the valedictory programme as the valedictory guest. 

While congratulating the winners, he also lauded the efforts of the NTA, led by its president, Pele Khezhie, for bringing numerous laurels to the state over the past 34 years.

He encouraged the players to strive for excellence and maintain a healthy lifestyle, while also emphasising the importance of building friendships through sports. He also acknowledged and expressed gratitude to everyone involved in ensuring the success of the championship.

A short speech was also delivered by Shevohu Nienu, chairperson of Phek Town Council (PTC), who stated that taekwondo is not only a physical activity but also a mental discipline that focusses on perseverance and self-control.

A total of 340 athletes from 14 districts, along with a team from Indira Gandhi Academy, Kohima (DYRS), contested in the two-day championship. The event involved 18 officials, including two international officials, as well as 60 coaches and managers.
