KOHIMA — Ahead of the nationwide Teachers’ Day celebration, outstanding teachers in Kohima district were awarded for their dedication and contributions in the field of education during a programme held at the multi-purpose hall of Rüzhükhrie Government Higher Secondary School, Kohima.

A total of four teachers from various schools in Kohima and seven best performing school heads were recognised during the ceremony, organised by the Kohima District Education Office. The award for school heads were sponsored by DEO, senior SDEO Kohima and SDEO Chiephobozou.

The deputy commissioner (DC) of Kohima, Kumar Ramnikant, and director of School Education, Wonthungo Tsopoe, gave away the awards including citation and cash to the teachers and heads of institutions.

Addressing the gathering, the DC commended teachers for their tireless effort in moulding the children and described teaching as a noble profession.

“In today’s world where everyone is fighting hard to go ahead, it is the teachers who are making the way for the students because their motto is always of the welfare of students,” Ramnikant said.

He admitted that the noble work of teachers often go unnoticed and unappreciated.

Stressing on the need to keep pace with the fast changing world, he urged the teachers to update themselves with the changes. He added that teachers should impart students to have the confidence to face challenges in life.

The DC also advocated equal treatment according to their caliber and capabilities irrespective of their economic background.

While acknowledging that Kohima is much ahead of many districts, he challenged the teachers to impart quality education to enable the students compete at the national and international levels.

Also speaking on the occasion, the director of School Education, Wonthungo Tsopoe, has likened teachers to that of a gardener working in a big field, who never fails to clean the field at the right time.

In this regards, he questioned whether the teachers are sacrificing their time for the students. He called upon the teachers to introspect whether they have done well in their assigned responsibilities.

“A teacher can be recognised as good when one possessed empathy, humility and love. Teachers are the icon of society and should invest in the children,” Tsopoe said.

He further encouraged the teachers to dedicate their service, commitment and time to the children so that there is a better generation and a better society tomorrow.

The advisor of All Nagaland Private School Association (ANPSA), Zhopota Rhakho, emphasised that teaching is more than just a profession. According to him, it is a calling and a mission.

He believed that the award accorded to the teachers was a testament to their relentless effort, which called for greater responsibilities. He added that teachers have the power to influence lives, mould character and instill values that would last a lifetime.

He further encouraged the teachers to keep believing the potential in their students and be the source of inspiration and hope.

The four teachers who were felicitated included Zhazolie Metha, LT of GHS Botsa; Kezhalezo Solo, GT of GHS PWD; Albert Tungoe, GT of GHS Forest Colony; and Katia Lohrii, assistant teacher of Alderville Higher Secondary School, Jotsoma.

The best performing school heads namely Neingukholie Vielie, teacher-in-charge of GPS Peducha; Supenmo Mozhui, head teacher of GMS Phezoucha; Kekhriengulie Khezhie, teacher in-charge of GPS Tekhuba; Khrietseinuo Yano, head teacher of GMS Ziezou; Rose Chishi, vice principal of Dr. N Kire GHSS, Seikhazou; Rukuvito Kikhi, assistant headmaster of GHS Sakhabama; and Rev. Fr. Charles D’souza, principal of St. Paul’s Institute, Phesama; were also felicitated on the occasion.
