DIMAPUR — The Gorkha Public Panchayat Kohima (GPPK) on Sunday observed Balidan Diwas (Martyrs’ Day) to honour the supreme sacrifice of martyrs Major Durga Malla and Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse at the community hall in Chandmari, Kohima.

Major Malla sacrificed his life for Indian independence on August 25, 1944, while Captain Kenguruse, MVC (posthumous), laid down his life during the Kargil War on June 28, 1999, GPPK mentioned in a press release.

Attending the event as a special guest, Angami Public Organisation (APO) president Thejao Vihienuo said that the history of mankind is a history of migration of people and communities, with the most important aspect being peaceful coexistence.

He expressed happiness that Gorkhas and the people of Kohima have coexisted for many years. He lauded the Tsütuonuomia (T Khel) Council for its accommodative spirit and commended the Gorkhas for their contribution to the development of Kohima town.

Maintaining that the Gorkhas came to Kohima with bravery and loyalty as their two most prominent characteristics, Vihienuo hoped that the present generations continue to uphold these traits.

Also hailing the two martyrs, he said such occasions are opportune for strengthening one’s patriotism and enhancing commitment to society and its people. He called upon everyone to be dedicated and committed to the greater cause of society.

Guest of honour, Superintendent of Police, Kohima, Bharat Laxman Markad, said that although the martyrs were from different places and communities, their sacrifice exemplified that they were united by a common goal and love for the nation.

He also called upon the gathering to strive with dedication and commitment to achieve the country the martyrs dreamed of, stating that this would be a fitting homage to their supreme sacrifice.

The Gorkha Students’ Union Chümoukedima District (GSUCD) also observed the day at the GSUCD office in Singrijan village.

In a press release, the GSUCD mentioned that on August 25, 1944, Major Durga Malla, the first Gorkha martyr of the Indian National Army (INA), was hanged at Delhi Central Jail. He was only 31 years old.

The special guest of the programme was Gopal Lama, president of the Chümoukedima District Gorkha Union. In his speech, he highlighted the contributions of Gorkha freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the cause of the country.

Tezu Pradhan, head GB of Singrijan and Khopanala village, urged the gathering to give befitting reverence to those who died for the cause. The significance of the day was pronounced by Ajay Thapa, general secretary of GSUCD.
