CMK ornganises second ‘Jhum Fair’ in Chiechama village
CHIECHAMA — The second edition of ‘Jhum Fair’, organised by the Chiechamiapfü Mechü Krotho (CMK), was held at the Amphitheatre, Chiechama village under Kohima district, on Friday.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, CMK chairperson Neikuonuo Rüpreo informed that the CMK had envisaged the jhum fair as an annual activity and that the first edition held last year proved to be a success, for which she thanked God Almighty for the bountiful blessings.
She pointed out that the exhibition and sales put up by various groups and individuals are results of hard work which are yielding high returns and, in turn, bolstering the economy of each family.
While informing that all the produce are locally grown and organic, Rupreo also acknowledged and commended the efforts of the participants for coming forward.
The chairperson also said that the fair is being organised to promote and facilitate sale of local produce of the village.
She further informed that last year, the villagers earned over INR 1 crore from the sale of organic vegetables and fruits. This year, the villagers are anticipating that the earning will double.
The next edition of the Jhum Fair sounds promising too as it was informed that farmers have already started clearing hundreds of jhum fields from this year itself.
As many as 23 stalls set up by churches, self-help groups (SHGs), individuals besides the various Khels stacked with local produce ranging from cucumber, tomato, maize, fresh chillies, pumpkin, banana, pineapple, varieties of edible leaves and ethnic delicacies. Agricultural tools, handicrafts and other art works are also a highlight for the fair.
Earlier, Khriesaneisa Dzeyie, pastor of Chiechama Basa Baptist Church said the invocation prayer and Thepfukhrietuo Rupreo led the programme.
