Water-logging disrupts life in several parts of Dimapur
DIMAPUR — Intermittent rainfall over the past 48 hours has left a trail of destruction in Dimapur, with several areas grappling with severe water-logging, flooded roads, disrupted transportation, and damage to homes and property.
On Monday evening, a few hours of heavy downpour led to chaos in the low-lying areas of Ragailong Colony, as flood waters rose to knee-level, submerging homes and disrupting normal life.
The Government Middle School in Ragailong Ward-4 was closed due to water-logging on the premises, further compounded by poor drainage system that caused water to overflow onto the road.
Roshini, who lives in a thatched house in the affected area, told Eastern Mirror that the water level was hip-deep on Sunday but receded slightly by Monday. She said that the four-room house, which is home to three families, was severely affected.
Another family living in a nearby thatched house reported having to buy drinking water due to contamination and invasion of leeches due to the flooding.
Across Ragailong Colony, residents said that at least 10 thatched houses were inundated.
One resident recounted ordering food from a hotel as her kitchen was submerged, adding that the water level, which reached bed-height on Sunday night, had receded to knee-level by Monday.
Vilhume Colony and SM Colony were also severely affected, with over 20 houses in Vilhume Colony reporting flood damage.
The clogged drains in Vilhume Colony overflowed, sending water gushing onto the roads and into homes while the road leading to SM Colony was submerged under almost three feet of water.
Water-logging also plagued the bus/Sumo stand at the Super Market area and the GS road stretch near Dhobinalla, as is common during heavy rains.
