India allocates of INR 18 crore for promotion of Manipuri language and script
IMPHAL — The government of India has allocated a sum of INR 18 crore to Manipur as the first instalment for promotion of Manipuri language and script.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh took to microblogging site X to announce the development.
“I sincerely thank and deeply appreciate Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji for giving due recognition to Manipuri language and its script by allocating a funding of INR 18 crore as 1st installment for their conservation and promotion,” he wrote.
‘I further extend my appreciation to Hon’ble Rajya Sabha MP Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba, for his continued efforts to elevate the status of Manipuri as a classical language. Besides the promotion of Meiteilon, the state government has been putting efforts to protect the tribal dialects spoken in the state with various courses, activities and programmes,’ he added.

Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba had earlier shared the same on X, adding that a proposal seeking classical tag for Manipuri language would be sent to the Central authority.
It may be mentioned that Manipuri language (Meiteilon) was added to the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, making it one of the official languages of India on August 20, 1992.
