NU, AR observe International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

Assam Rifles with Yimkhiung cultural troupe on the occasion of International Day of the World’s Indigenous People in Pungro on Friday.

DIMAPUR — The Tribal Research Centre (TRC) of Nagaland University (NU), in collaboration with of the Department of Sociology, NU Lumami, on Friday observed ‘International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples’ at the conference hall of Sociology department on the theme “Protecting the rights of indigenous peoples in voluntary isolation and initial contact.”

Prof. Lanusashi Longkumar from Geography department, who delivered a special talk on the theme, urged for recognition of the rich cultural heritage, profound wisdom and enduring resilience of indigenous people around the globe, an update from the university stated.

He said that indigenous communities have been the stewards of the planet’s natural resources for millennia, holding a profound understanding of the environment and sustainable living.

“Yet, despite their invaluable contribution, indigenous people have faced and continue to face significant challenges,” he said.

Longkumar further said “It is our collective responsibility to support their rights, advocate for justice and ensure that their voices are heard and respected.”

Dr. Srikanth Yamsani, assistant professor of TRC, chaired the programme, while Prof. Athungo Ovung, director of TRC and head of Sociology, delivered the welcome address.

The lecture was followed by a folk song by MA Sociology students and screening of a short documentary titled ‘A future for Taiwan’s indigenous people,’ a DW documentary.

In a related programme, the Assam Rifles celebrated the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People in Pungro under Kiphrie district on Friday.

The celebration was aimed at honouring and recognising the rich cultural heritage and contributions of the indigenous communities residing in the area.

A defence release stated that Assam Rifles along with local villagers participated in a series of cultural performances, traditional games and educational sessions that highlighted the significance of indigenous knowledge and practices.

Assam Rifles also facilitated a community interaction session where issues concerning the welfare and development of the indigenous people were discussed.

It stated that the event not only provided a platform for cultural exchange but also reinforced the Assam Rifles’ role as a key contributor to the social and cultural fabric of the region.
