KVK Longleng organises training on millets cultivation

DIMAPUR — ICAR-KVK, Longleng, organised a day-long training programme on ‘Sustainable practices of millets to manage resource depletion’ at its office in Longleng town on Friday.

An update from KVK Longleng stated that the programme was chaired by Dr. Lily Ngullie, ACTO Animal Science, wherein she encouraged the farmers to undertake millet cultivation with good agricultural practices to increase the production and productivity.

Dr. Pallabi Phukan, SMS (Social Sciences), coordinated the training programme. She also explained the importance of millet cultivation, nutritional benefit of millet, different types of millets and its cultivation practices. She further showed different value-added products of millet.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Kumari Pallavi, SMS (Home Science).

It mentioned that millets are considered as important grains, which have high nutrient content including dietary fibre, minerals, protein, iron, magnesium, essential fatty acids, B-Vitamins such as calcium, zinc and potassium.

It also stressed the need to promote millets as the cultivation of millets are convenient as they need less amount of maintenance, resistance to drought and matures earlier than cereal rice and wheat.

Around 42 young farmers, representatives from self help group (SHG), farmers producer organisation (FPO) and individual progressive farmer attended the programme.

The programme was organised under the leadership of Dr. HC Kalita, senior scientist and head of KVK, Longleng.
