DIMAPUR — A sensitisation workshop on “Preventing and combating child trafficking” was held at DPDB hall, Phek, on July 24, with Tongpang L Jamir, advocate at the Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench, as the resource person.
Jamir gave a detailed presentation on child trafficking, explaining human trafficking networks, their causes, modus operandi, various case studies, relevant laws, and the roles of various stakeholders such as the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR), police, NGOs, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), and others, according to a DIPR report.
He also addressed sexual exploitation, bonded labour, organ trafficking, and illegal adoption networks that constitute child trafficking. Additionally, he encouraged village heads to form village monitoring committees and urged students’ unions to establish legal cells for the same.
SP Phek, Dr. Pritpal Kaur, provided a brief overview of laws related to child trafficking, including the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act 1956, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act, the Bureau of National Standards (BNS), UNICEF guidelines, the child helpline 1098, the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (ATHU), and women’s help desks at police station levels.
Earlier, Deputy Commissioner of Phek, John Tsulise Sangtam, in his welcome address, deliberated on the significance of the programme.
The programme was chaired by Nengpichong Singsit, EAC Phek, and attended by Phek Town Council members, student leaders, women leaders, village elders, and the public.
