Dimapur Police initiates activities to combat air pollution
DIMAPUR — Commissionerate of Police, Dimapur, has initiated various activities to prevent air pollution in Dimapur for the financial year 2023-24 under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).
An update from the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, stated that various activities were taken up on a wide scale in accordance with the NCAP plan. The activities included enforcement and awareness drives to check vehicular emissions creating air pollution through checking Pollution under Control Certificate (PUCC), distribution of pamphlets ‘Together for clean air’ in English and Nagamese, installation of NCAP hoarding display boards at traffic islands, ‘Do not burn waste’ display boards erected at public places where wastes are randomly burnt.
It stated that those initiatives were taken up in an endeavour to create awareness especially in regard to vehicle generated pollution whereby more than 70% of the air pollution across the globe is caused by the motor vehicles.
“The fuel on which a vehicle runs get burned inside the engine, which in turn emits carbon dioxide (contributes to climate change and global warming) and harmful gases such carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, particulate matter and other volatile organic compounds. These gases degrade the quality of air and hamper the health of a person to a dangerous extent. These emissions can cause smog, heart and lung diseases and cancer,” the update stated.
It pointed out that motor vehicles remain a major source of air pollutants especially where there is more traffic adding air pollution is damaging the planet and contributing adversely to climate change.
It further stated that the Commissionerate Police, Dimapur, undertook the above mentioned activities with an aim to encourage the citizens of Dimapur to make conscious effort and contribute towards improving the air we breathe.
