DIMAPUR — The Department of Power has informed that it is in the process of migrating to e-billing of electricity bills, after which no hard copies of the electricity bills will be served but bills will be delivered to the consumers in the form of SMS, e-mail and also made available in the web portal www.dopn.gov.in.

For the e-billing to materialise, the department needs to update the consumers’ credentials with valid mobile number and e-mail address, the executive engineer of Dimapur electrical division stated in a press release.

Consumers have been requested to visit the office of the respective sub-divisional officer and submit their valid credentials.

Alternately, consumers can also visit the web portal www.dopn.gov.in and login, where they will have the option to register as new users.

Once the valid consumer number is registered successfully, consumers can get access to update profile option and their credentials can be updated instantly.

The main objective of the department to adopt e-billing is in line with energy conservation, digital India initiative and save environment, the release stated.

The department also listed the varied benefits e-billing.

Environmental, energy conservation perspective

  • Reduction in paper consumption: e-billing significantly decreases the amount of paper used for printing bills, contributing to the conservation of trees and reducing the environmental impact of paper production, including energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Lower carbon footprint: By eliminating or reducing the need for printing, transporting, and delivering paper bills, e-billing helps lower the overall carbon footprint associated with electricity billing operations.
  • Waste reduction: e-billing eliminates the disposal of paper bills, thereby reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills or requires recycling. This supports better waste management practices and reduces environmental pollution.
  • Energy savings: e-billing saves energy that would otherwise be used in the paper production process and in transporting physical bills. This aligns with energy conservation efforts and promotes sustainable practices in billing operations.

Department’s perspective, Digital India initiatives

  • Cost efficiency: e-billing reduces costs associated with paper, printing, and postage for the department. These cost savings can be reinvested into improving infrastructure, upgrading technology, or enhancing customer service.
  • Improved operational efficiency: e-billing streamlines the billing process by automating tasks such as bill generation, delivery, and payment tracking. This improves operational efficiency within the department, reducing manual workload and minimising errors.
  • Enhanced customer service: e-billing provides customers with faster access to their bills and transaction history through online portals or emails. This enhances customer satisfaction by offering convenience and timely information, thereby reducing queries and enhancing service delivery.
  • Data security and compliance: e-billing systems can enhance data security through encryption and secure online portals, ensuring the protection of sensitive customer information. This helps the Department of Power to comply with data protection regulations and maintain high standards of service.
  • Alignment with Digital India initiatives: The Department of Power’s adoption of e-billing aligns with the goals and initiatives of Digital India, which aims to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. By embracing digital solutions like e-billing, the department supports digital transformation efforts, enhances transparency, and improves service delivery to citizens.

“In conclusion, transitioning to e-billing for electricity bills not only benefits the environment and enhances administrative efficiency but also aligns the Department of Power in Nagaland with the broader objectives of Digital India, promoting sustainability, efficiency, and digital inclusivity in service delivery,” the release stated.
