KOHIMA — Neikhozo Suokhrie, the elected councillor from Ward 18 (Paramedical), was elected as the chairperson of the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) on Monday, while Khrielievi Chusi from Ward 17 (Agri/Electrical/Forest) was elected as the deputy chairman.

Both the councillors are from the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP).

“I will give my best to Kohima Town and exercise the responsibilities given to me for the betterment of the city,” Suokhrie told Eastern Mirror after being assigned with the new role.

He assured to deliver his duties according to the powers and functions granted, while emphasising the need for both adequate manpower and strong public support for the civic body to achieve its goals.

“Today, I am elected as the chairperson of KMC, but I have to coordinate with chief minister Neiphiu Rio and the government. After that, we will determine the proposals and plans we need to implement,” he said.

Suokhrie said that the councillors, although eager to begin work, are still unfamiliar with their specific powers and functions. They are still awaiting clarification on their powers and functions under the Municipal Act, as the urban local bodies (ULB) election was held after a gap of 20 years in the state, he said.

“Since the council has just been formed, we will carry out our duties only as directed by the administration,” he added.

During the day, Suokhrie and Chusi were elected through a high-powered committee for the formation of the new KMC, with all 13 victorious NDPP councillors present at the NDPP Central Headquarters in Kohima.

Khrielelie elected CTC chairperson

Meanwhile, Khrielelie Kerhü-o was elected as the chairperson of Chiephobozou Town Council (CTC) and Kekhrieneinuo Zumvü as the deputy chairperson during a joint meeting with the councillors elect of CTC on the same day.
