DIMAPUR — The Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) has temporarily suspended the ‘public emergency’ in eastern Nagaland.

The decision was announced following a meeting of the ENPO Central Executive Council (CEC) held at its headquarters in Tuensang on July 3.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the ENPO said that the move is intended to foster mutual understanding and to pursue a peaceful resolution with the government of India regarding the creation of Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT).

The public emergency had been in effect since February 5, 2024.

Further, it clarified that the suspension is subject to review and could be reinstated under compelling circumstances.

On ULB nominees

The ENPO also addressed the issue of urban local body (ULB) nominees, stating that as the eastern districts of Nagaland did not participate in the recent ULB elections, there are no vacant nominee positions to fill.

“Simply put, no election means no nominees. Therefore, the question of appointing nominees to the ULB in Eastern Nagaland areas does not arise,” the ENPO statement read.

So also, the Chenmoho resolution–which was adopted on February 23, 2024, and calls for total abstention from all state and central elections– and the ULB nomination process are closely intertwined, it said, without elaborating further.
