NSDMA issues urgent weather warning; heavy rains expected in Nagaland

DIMAPUR — The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has issued a severe weather warning, predicting widespread heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across the state until July 8.

These showers may be accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning, it said, in a press release on Monday, adding that extremely heavy rainfall is expected in the districts of Kohima, Phek, Wokha, Zunheboto, Kiphire, Noklak, Shamator and Tuensang.

Issuing an orange alert for Kiphire, Phek, Noklak, Shamator, and Tuensang districts from July 2 to the 4th, the NSDMA urged residents to take necessary precautions from lightning strikes and gales that may cause disruptions to communication and connectivity.

Due to the likelihood of excessive precipitation in the hill sector, Nagaland’s lowland and foothill regions, including Dimapur, Niuland, Chümoukedima, Bhandari, Pangti, Tizit, and Tuli, are likely to be impacted by inundated water logging and flash floods, it cautioned.

Further, it said that all the major rivers of the state will experience a surge in water level, and advised the public to refrain from picnicking and fishing near river banks. Farmers are also advised not to camp or sleep overnight beside river banks as flash floods may occur, it said.

The NSDMA also requested all the District Disaster Management Authorities and other line departments to be on alert to save lives and properties during this monsoon period.
