KOHIMA — Ahead of the ULB election, the Chakhesang Clean Election Movement (CCEM) organised an awareness tour to promote free and fair elections in three towns within the Phek district on June 10 and 12.

Members of CCEM addressed the gatherings in all three towns—Chozuba, Pfutsero, and Phek—which together encompass a total of 31 seats/wards, as mentioned in a press release.

During the events, CCEM chairman Rev. Vezopa Rhakho stated that the primary goal of the movement was to conscientiously appeal to voters to act in accordance with what is right. He emphasised the importance of promoting free and fair elections and urged people to act with integrity, adhere to the election code of conduct, and select capable leaders.

Rev. Muluvoyi Nienu, the finance secretary of the Chakhesang Baptist Church Council, added that the movement neither supports nor opposes any political parties or candidates. Its focus is solely on electing capable leaders dedicated to serving the people. He stressed the importance of upholding the principle of one man, one vote during elections.

Murohu Chotso, a core committee member of CCEM, cautioned the gathering against engaging in corrupt practices, especially during elections, including ULB polls. He highlighted that bribery constitutes a criminal offence under IPC Section 171B.

Chakhesang Mothers’ Association president Zhonelu Tunyi stated that ULB elections should not be predicated on village, family, or regional affiliations. She stated that, as candidates, they represent the interests of thousands of individuals.

She further highlighted that the historic 33 percent reservation for women in these ULB elections marks a significant milestone for women. Tunyi urged the populace to unite and elect candidates based on their capabilities.

Chakhesang Youth Front president Kevesa Khamo, Chakhesang Public Organisation vice president Eyekowe Tara, and public leaders from the respective towns also addressed the gathering.

The CCEM is comprised of the Chakhesang Baptist Church Council (CBCC), Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO), Chakhesang Mothers’ Association (CMA), Chakhesang Youth Front (CYF), Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) and Chakhesang Theological Association (CTA).
