Candidates file nomination for town council elections

DIMAPUR — As the elections for urban local bodies (ULB) set to take place on June 26 with 33% reservation for women, candidates from various political parties have filed nominations in their respective jurisdictions.

Altogether, 32 candidates filed nomination for the 15 wards under Wokha Town Council (WTC) for the urban local body elections. Seven political parties including 11 from NDPP, 7 from BJP, 8 from NCP, 1 from NPF, 2 from NPP, 1 from INC and 2 independent candidates filed their nomination.

The additional deputy commissioner (ADC) and returning officer (RO) of Wokha, K Furhesie Nyuwi, informed that scrutiny for the nomination papers would be held in his office chamber on June 13 from 9 am onwards.

In Kohima, a total of 41 candidates have filed nomination papers for the upcoming Kohima Municipal Council (KMC).

The administrator of KMC and returning officer (RO), T Lanusenla Longkumer, informed that a total of 10 nominations were registered at her office in Kohima on Tuesday.

During the day, three candidates from NDPP, two from NPP and four independent candidates filed their papers.

Of the 10 candidates, three are male and seven are female.

On Monday, 31 candidates filed their papers including 16 from NDPP, 9 from NPP, 5 independent candidates and one from INC. Among the nominees, 12 were female.

Of the total 19 KMC wards, six are reserved for women.

Meanwhile, a total of 12 candidates have also filed their nominations for the Jalukie Town Council (JTC) election at the office of the additional deputy commissioner (ADC) and returning officer (RO) of Jalukie, TL Kiusumong Tikhir, on June 10.

The candidates included Pausuikumle of NDPP, Samjai of Independent, Gailialung of NDPP, Namdatbo of Congress, Menailiu of NDPP, Atwa Meru of Independent, Hadi of NDPP, Adietpe of NDPP, Rayilungwangle of NDPP, Tingba Hegui of NDPP, Lathaingam Ruangmei of NDPP, Wanglo Zeliang of Independent.

On June 7, Zavitso Kense of Independent filed his nomination for JTC election.

A total of 29 candidates including nine women and 20 men have also filed nomination for the Chozuba Town Council (CTC) election on Tuesday.

There are nine wards under the Chozuba Town Council.

Meanwhile, eight female candidates have filed nomination for the Mangkolemba Town Council election 2024, bringing the total number of candidates to 20 from nine wards.

Among them, seven women would contest from the designated reserved seats for women in ward 1, 4, and 7. Additionally, one woman candidate from NDPP would contest for the general seat in ward 9.

The 20 contenders consisted of 8 from NDPP, 1 from INC and 11 Independent.

The Zunheboto region of National Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) also held a party ticket distribution programme for the upcoming ULB elections under 32, 34, 35 and 36 Assembly Constituencies in Zunheboto town on June 10.

The region president, Khehoshe Yepthomi, called upon the candidates to keep the faith the party has bestowed upon them and not let the party down. Yepthomi added that the party officials would always be ready to support its candidates and encouraged them to seek votes in humility.

NPP kicks off campaign for candidate

The National People’s Party (NPP) on Tuesday launched campaign for its candidate, Sonuo Yanger, under KMC Ward 18 for the upcoming urban local body elections in Kohima at Molu Ki

The programme commenced with an invocation prayer said by Iminungla Longkumer, pastor in-charge of KABA Merhülietsa, while Dr. Keviseto Kintso, president of NPP Kohima, delivered the welcome address.

Speaking at the programme, MLA Dr. Tseilhoutuo expressed optimism on the potential of Sanuo Yanger to bring about meaningful development in Ward 18 (Merhülietsa and Lower Agri Colony).

In her address, Sonuo Yanger outlined her vision for Ward 18 by focusing on development, inclusivity and transparency. Her address was met with applause and enthusiasm from the supporters.

Sonuo Yanger is contesting in Ward 18 even though it is not a women reservation seat. Her decision to run reflects her commitment to serve the community and her belief in gender equality in leadership roles, an update from the party stated.

The formal programme concluded with a mass prayer.

The kick off programme was attended by several prominent national level leaders of NPP including James PK Sangma, NPP national general secretary (Organisation); Nicky Nungkhlaw, NPYF national president; Audrey, mahila president of NPP Nagaland; and Hiketo Shohe, NPP state general secretary (organization).
