KOHIMA — Commemorating World Environment Day, Christ King Higher Secondary School in Kohima organised a painting and drawing competition at the school premises.

About thousand students enthusiastically participated at the event on the theme “Land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience,” highlighting critical environmental issues such as land health, desert prevention and water scarcity.

The competitions were conducted in the school classrooms, encouraging students to express their creativity and ideas on 15 sub-themes related to the main topic.

The sub-themes included “The beauty of reforestation,” “Rainwater harvesting for a greener tomorrow,” “Healthy soil, healthy planet,” and “Children as guardians of the environment,” among others.

Fr. Innocent Liangkamang Panmei, the school’s principal, said the competition was a part of the school’s broader efforts to promote environmental awareness and action among its students.

Dwelling on a topic, Panmei highlighted the healing power of nature in the busy lives and emphasised its vital role in enhancing physical and mental well-being.

He emphasised the importance of reconnecting with nature, citing research that shows positive impacts on overall health and well-being, reminding that nature is not just a backdrop but a crucial component of our daily lives, deserving of attention and care.

“By incorporating nature into urban planning and prioritising access to green spaces, communities can reap the benefits of a healthier environment,” Panmei said.

Nagaland Rhododendron Society (NRS) also observed World Environment Day at the Rhododendron Conservation Centre, Jakhama.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Azo Louis Kharütso, a senior specialist and advisor of NRS, encouraged members to plant trees, noting that this responsibility extends beyond a single day to a lifetime commitment.

Dr. Kharütso underscored the need for reflection on the planet’s condition and the impact of human activities on the natural world. He drew attention to critical issues such as climate change, pollution, deforestation, and biodiversity loss that challenge the global community today, emphasising the urgency for collective action to ensure a sustainable future.

Meanwhile, Dr. Kelühol Tase, president of the society, informed that the event culminated in a rhododendron plantation drive.

Rosemount International Preschool Kohima also observed the occasion with relevant activities during the day.
