KOHIMA — Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) candidate and its President S Supongmeren Jamir was declared winner for the state’s lone Lok Sabha seat as counting of votes ended on Tuesday.

The Congress last won the Lok Sabha seat from the state in 1999.

Speaking to media persons after the victory here in Kohima on Tuesday, Jamir thanked the electors of the state for giving their mandate to the party.

“I’m so grateful to the people of the state because their wisdom, their understanding was much wider than our political leaders,” he said.

He assured that the Congress party will try to work for the development, interest and welfare of the people.

The people’s mandate ‘clearly shows that we need a change. So, we have to go accordingly to make the change in our state’, he said, adding that the citizens had come forward to “save the democracy as well as to protect equality between minority and the mainland”.

Assuring to work for the people as promised in the party manifesto, he said, “We have to work hard; we have to deliver justice to the people.”

Regarding the supposed cabinet berth promised to him by INDIA bloc if it comes to power, he said it’s now up to them to deliver their commitment. He added that people are ‘definitely expecting’ that.

One of the main agenda of the Congress that made the people vote in favour of the party was religion, he said, adding that as a Christian state, the people have shown their responsibility.

Jamir also indicated that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Nyay Yatra played out well in the state, as he came to know the problems of the state and shared the sentiments with the people.

Now, with this win, he said it is the responsibility of the Congress party to deliver it to the people.

Speaking about his main opponent Dr. Chumben Murry of NDPP who he defeated, Jamir said he was equally noble and humble person, adding that the contest between them is issue-based and not as persons.

He later received the winning certificate for the Nagaland Lok Sabha Election 2024 from the Commissioner and Returning Officer, Sushil Kumar Patel.
