DIMAPUR — With an aim to enlighten the public about rising cyber threats and devise collective strategies to tackle them effectively, Nagaland Police on Saturday hosted a crucial consultative meeting on cyber crime awareness at the PHQ conference hall in Kohima.

An update from Nagaland Police stated that Vikram M Khalate, IGP (CID), chaired the meeting comprising various stakeholders including representatives from the department of School Education, Nagaland College Principals’ Association (NCPA), private schools, students, law enforcement, social media influencers and media.

During the meeting, it was shared that school students and public across India are being targeted for fraudulent job offers, leading to thousands of reported cases.

Speaking at the programme, Rupin Sharma, DGP of Nagaland, stressed the importance of the helpline 1930 in preventing financial losses and advised against falling prey to sextortion and hacking attempts. He emphasised the rapid changes in cybercrime tactics and the need for continuous updates to combat evolving threats.

Highlighting the pervasive lack of awareness in Nagaland, he underscored the importance of educating the public to safeguard against cyber threats. He also emphasised the need for responsible role of social media platforms such as youtube, facebook, instagram, whatsapp etc so that factional reporting is not compromised at the altar of sensationalisation.

A panel discussion was also held under the leadership of IGP Range, Limasunep Jamir, in which KPA Ilyas, DIG (CID); Arung Walling representing The Nagas (FB) and Niki Sekhose, president of ANPSA, made insightful contributions.
