KOHIMA — Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator S Toiho Yeptho from 33-Suruhoto Assembly Constituency was unanimously elected Deputy Speaker of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) on Monday.

He was the only candidate to file nomination for the post. His nomination was proposed by the first woman minister of Nagaland Salhoutuonuo Kruse from the NDPP and seconded by NCP MLA P Longon, NLA Speaker Sharingain Longkumer informed.

Upon his election on the first day of the 14th NLA budget session, Yeptho assured the house that he would to perform his duty with all sincerity while also preserving the house’s rich tradition.

He thanked the members for the honour and for electing him unopposed.

“In all humility, I humbly accept the constitutional chair of the deputy speaker of the 14th NLA as per the verdict of this august house,” he said.

While reminding that NLA is 60 years old and is a mature house, he also vowed to perform his duties sincerely, preserving the rich tradition and high standard of the house as set by the predecessors.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, in a felicitation note, said that Yeptho being elected unopposed was an indication of his confidence the house reposed on him. Rio also expressed optimism that Yeptho with his “vibrant personality” would be an efficient Deputy Speaker.

With efficient Speaker and Deputy Speaker in place, the chief minister hoped that the house will be conducted in a ‘smooth and effective manner.”

Rio also mentioned the public services that Yeptho has brought with him. He was the leader of various student organizations and former village council chairman of Chekiye.
