He added that a special campaign was launched under JJM to make provision of tap water supply in schools including schools for girls, Anganwadi centres and Ashramshalas (tribal residential schools) for drinking and cooking of mid-day meals, hand washing and piped water supply in toilets on priority.

Informing that drinking water is a state subject, he stated that the responsibility of planning, approval, implementation, operation and maintenance of drinking water supply schemes including those under the Jal Jeevan Mission lies with State/UT governments. He stated that the Government of India supports the states by providing technical and financial assistance.

Chandrasekhar, in his reply, stated that significant progress has been made in the country since the launch of JJM, where at the start of JJM in August 2019, only 3.23 crore rural households were reported to have tap water connections. He added that as on December 19, 2023, around 13.24 crore rural households in the country out of 19.24 crore households have been provided with tap water connections under JJM.
