Workshops on low-cost teaching aids held in Niuland, Chümoukedima
DIMAPUR — The first phase of the district-wise training-cum-workshop on low-cost/no-cost teaching aids was conducted by the Breeze Women Welfare Association (BWWA) in Niuland and Chümoukedima districts on November 24 and 25.
According to a press release, the event on the first day was held at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Nihokhu, Niuland, and the second day’s programme was held at Spring Valley School, Chümoukedima.
During her keynote address at the opening session of the training programme at JNV Nihokhu, BWWA president Ani Yepthomi highlighted the National Education Policy (NEP) and its emphasis on low-cost/no-cost teaching methodologies.
According to her, the primary objective of this programme is to inspire teachers and students to develop a strong interest in teaching and learning by using low-cost learning aids and to foster a continual learning attitude to transform the educational landscape.
She expressed hope that the activities conducted during the training-cum-workshop would be effective and aid in the proper use of low-cost/no-cost materials for understanding complex topics.
The programme is set to continue with similar training sessions and workshops for students and teachers across various districts in the coming weeks. This initiative is being facilitated and supported by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
It is being conducted in collaboration with Kaziranga University, Jorhat, and ThinkTac, Bangalore.
BWWA Nagaland is a non-profit NGO based in Dimapur that was founded in 1982 by a group of like-minded women to voice out gender-based concerns as well as to alleviate the conditions of women and empower them through education and employment opportunities.
BWWA’s agenda has always been societal and educational reform. However, in 2008, the organisation experienced a shift when it considered bringing into its folds the propagation of educational well-being, specifically science and technology, to the masses, particularly students and teachers in Nagaland and beyond.
The training sessions on low-cost/no-cost teaching aids are an initiative of BWWA to encourage teachers and students to take an active interest in teaching and learning by utilising low-cost learning aids.
Recognising the importance of ‘learning by doing’, this training programme is being conducted to educate teachers, who will then disseminate the knowledge to encourage students to engage in learning by showcasing low-cost aids in the classroom and creating their own low-cost learning materials.
