KOHIMA — To sensitise women self help group (SHG) members on their roles and responsibility as well as role of women in water related activities, Atal Mission for Urban Transformation (AMRUT), in collaboration with National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM) and Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), organised a site visits to the water treatment plants (WTP) in Jotsoma on Wednesday.
Medozeu Chatsu, PHED junior engineer of Kohima (Urban), led the participants to the sites and explained all about the water treatment process, stated an update from the department.
Kiniholi Kinimi, state mission director of DAY-NULM under the Directorate of Urban Development, informed that a total of 32 participants from 22 SHG in Kohima district under DAY-NLUM attended the unique initiative called Jal Diwali- “Water for women-women for water” which is being held from November 7. The initiative would culminate on November 9.
She stated that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs under AMRUT 2.0, has initiated the plans to organise a unique initiative called “Women for water, water for women campaign” in collaboration with the National Urban Livelihood Mission to celebrate “Jal Diwali” from November 7 to the 9th.
Kinimi informed that the women from self-help groups got the opportunity to visit water treatment plants and provided them with an understanding on the various processes involved in supplying clean and safe drinking water to households. Besides, they were trained on water quality testing procedures to ensure the citizens receive good quality water.
It mentioned that the main objective of the visits was to foster a sense of belonging and ownership among women towards the water infrastructure. Moreover, the visit would create opportunities for women to interact through interviews, promoting inclusivity and involvement.
Similar programme was organised in Phek district, wherein Weshusie Pojar, PHED JE of Phek, emphasised on the importance role of women in water management in the society. He spoke on biological contaminations causing short term diseases like typhoid, dengue while chemical contamination of water might have a long term impact on health.
A total of 30 women SHG members attended the programme and were acknowledged with souvenirs and field kits.
