ATMA conducts demonstrations, trainings for farmers across districts
DIMAPUR — The Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) Peren, Tening block, held two demonstration programmes and three capacity-building programmes at Old Tesen village and Nchangram village on November 1 and 2.
According to a press release, assistant technology manager (ATM) Rokozhalie Namdau conducted a demonstration on ‘disease management and cultural practise of cole crops’ on November 1 at Old Tesen, in which he said that farmers should practice crop rotations, intercropping, and other cultural methods to control pest infections rather than relying heavily on pesticides.
He also demonstrated how to use a yellow sticky insect trap in vegetable fields.
On the same day at Old Tesen, the block also held a demonstration on ‘nursery bed preparation of cole crops’ with resource person ATM Kevichamsi Kaurinta, who gave a detailed hands-on demonstration on bed preparation, line sowing, spacing, maintenance, and timely irrigation to the farmer.
The demonstration programme drew 15 farmers in total, and seeds were distributed to them.
Block technology manager (BTM) Lily Tungoe conducted two capacity-building programmes on ‘preparation of ginger ale’ and ‘value addition and preparation of making ginger candy’ at Nchangram village on November 2.
Meanwhile, ATM Matsungtoshi N Pongener led a capacity-building programme on chilli pickles for food security groups (FSGs) and self-help groups (SHGs), and farmers were also taught the importance of proper product packaging and labelling.
Zunheboto: ATMA Zunheboto Suruhuto block held a demonstration programme at Surumi village on October 27.
According to a press release, during the programme, a demonstration on ‘cultivation of cole crops’ was conducted by BTM Livika, where she demonstrated the preparation of a nursery seed bed along with ridges with specific spacing for the cultivation of cole crops on a demo plot.
She also explained that transplanting should be done when the seedlings are four to six weeks old and that crop rotation, composting, and timely hand weeding should be done systematically to achieve a good yield.
Altogether, 20 farmers attended the demonstration programme.
Meanwhile, ATMA Akuhaito block held a two-day training, demonstration, and capacity-building programme for farmers at Emlomi village on October 26 and 27.
On the first day, ATM Alovi Zhimomi conducted two demonstration programmes, one on raised bed preparation of winter vegetable crops and one on the use of a hand cultivator tool.
On the second day, a capacity building programme was carried out, with resource person ATM Vishepu Sumi encouraging farmers to develop competencies and skills that would make them more effective and sustainable. He also provided training on cabbage nursery bed cultivation practices.
Tuensang: On October 26 and 27, ATMA Tuensang Sangsangnyu block held a winter vegetable training and demonstration programme at Ngangpong and Sangsangnyu villages in Tuensang.
During the programme, Mosaba Chang, AFA, Agriculture department, provided training and demonstrations on field pea package practices, while ATM Ajungla Aier demonstrated broccoli cultivation and introduced the farmers to the pokchoi crop. In addition, Roban Rat Killer was introduced to the farmers, and its uses and effects were mentioned.
Winter vegetable seeds such as cabbage, peas, pokchoi, broccoli, maize, and so on, as well as rat killer, were distributed to farmers as part of the programme, which was attended by 16 farmers.
