One arrested after fatal shooting in Nagaland’s Mokokchung district

MOKOKCHUNG — An altercation at Metsuben Farm near Mokokchung town on October 17, escalated into a fatal shooting, claiming the life of one Longshang Konyak, aged 54 years.

The altercation reportedly began following a prior argument between Longshang and his nephew.

According to the police, they were alerted about the incident that happened around 6: 30 pm on Tuesday, and upon arriving at the scene, they discovered Longshang’s body near a fishery pond, bearing an injury to his left chest, which was suspected to be a gunshot wound.

Initial inquiries shed light on the unfortunate sequence of events, that Longshang and his nephew had a heated altercation, likely exacerbated by the influence of alcohol, just two days prior to the incident. Following the altercation, the nephew reported the matter to the farm owner, who decided to address the situation, updated the police.

Witnesses present at the farm recounted that Longshang arrived with a Naga dao (machete), initiating a verbal confrontation with those in the farm. In response, the farm owner retrieved a .22 rifle from his farm premises. Attempting to intimidate Longshang, the owner fired three shots from the rifle. Tragically, one of the bullets hit the victim in the chest, leading to his unfortunate demise. Notably, a Naga dao was found in close proximity to the deceased, the police stated in a press release.

Subsequently, the suspected perpetrator, identified as Moasangba Jamir (61), was apprehended. And the police had seized a .22 rifle, along with four live rounds, from his possession.

 Additionally, three .22 empty cases were recovered from the scene. To prevent any potential escalation of the situation and to ensure the safety of the accused, he was promptly transferred to a nearby police station, the police stated.

The body of the deceased was handed over to the bereaved family after conducting the necessary formalities including a post-mortem examination at IMDH, Mokokchung, on Wednesday.

The police stated that a suo motto FIR was filed and a formal case registered under Mokokchung police station- I under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, read with Section 25 (IB) of the Arms Act.
