DIMAPUR — The science club of Phek Government College (PGC) organised a one-day field trip to Porba in the Sakraba range, Phek district, on October 14.
According to a press release from the college, the sites visited were a solar dryer owned by an alumnus of PGC, Swuyievezo Dzudou, in collaboration with Kirat Biotech, Assam, attached to a private botanical garden, and the National Research Centre on Mithun—ICAR Porba campus.
During the trip, students taking Botany papers learned about the medicinal plants grown in the botanical garden, including cucurma longa, paris polyphylla, valeriana sp., zanthoxylum sp., and others.
Chemistry honours and general students collected medicinal plant samples for experimental purposes.
Those taking the skill enhancement course ‘Renewable energy and energy harvesting’ got to see and learn how solar energy is harnessed for drying various products using the solar dryer. They also learned firsthand about the solar dryer’s design, construction, and performance.
During the visit to the National Research Centre on Mithun, zoology students were briefed on the conservation of mithun (bos frontalis), their ecological significance, and their role in social, cultural, and economic aspects of the indigenous community.
