DIMAPUR — Commemorating ‘National Wildlife Week,’ the Longshi and Ematha village level organisations (VLO), an environment sub-committee of the Nagaland State Rural Livelihood Mission (NSRLM) in Liphi village under Bhandari sub-division in Wokha district, along with the village councils and Gaonburas have pledged to conserve and preserve wildlife.

The ‘National Wildlife Week’ is being observed from October 2 to the 8th.

An update from NSRLM stated that the event assumed significance in the sub-division as the community struggles with the ongoing human-wild elephant conflict. It stated many lives have been lost including that of an NSRLM SHG member from Yanmhon Old Village.

It added that Longshi and Ematha village-level organisations are diligently working towards preservation and conservation of wildlife in line with the sustainable development goal (SDG) 15 ‘Life on land.’ It mentioned that SDG 15 is a vital global initiative aimed at protecting, restoring, and promoting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems by emphasising on the importance of biodiversity and the coexistence of humans and nature.

Report stated that the observance signified a collective commitment to addressing the human-elephant conflict and fostering coexistence between people and wildlife. It added that the involvement of dedicated committee along with the village council members and GBs underscored the importance of community-driven initiatives in conservation efforts.

“By raising awareness, implementing sustainable practices, and fostering a deeper understanding of the local ecosystem, these efforts aim to mitigate the conflict’s impact and promote harmonious coexistence. This observance serves as a reminder that it is not just a week-long event but a long-term commitment to safeguarding both our natural heritage and the well-being of the community,” read the statement.
