Sensitisation on drug abuse held in New Terogvunyu village

DIMAPUR — Terogvunyu Chüpwe Union (TCU), in collaboration with Kripa Foundation, held a one-day sensitisation programme on substance use disorder and drug abuse at New Terogvunyu village council hall on September 30.

An update from the TCU stated that the programme was chaired by its president, Sehilo Thyü, while an invocation prayer was said by, Setsing Tep, pastor of Terogvunyu Village Baptist Church.

Speaking on the occasion, the deputy commissioner of Tseminyu, Dr. Tinojungshi Chang, has shared on alarming rate of substance use and disorder in the newly created Tseminyu district. While assuring all possible assistance from the administration in dealing with the menace, Dr. Chang urged the public not to take the law into their own hands but report to the authority concerned for necessary actions.

He further encouraged the people of Terogvunyu to continue with such initiatives to fully eradicate the menace of drug abuse in the society.

Renbonthung Tungoe, project manager of Kripa Foundation, has termed addiction as a disease and explained that a person suffering from the disease could be treated through proper rehabilitation programme.

Meanwhile, Abou Mere, director of Kripa Foundation, spoke on social, physical, mental and spiritual problems associated with drug use. He added that those problems should be treated as a normal behaviour.

He further called upon the participants to focus only on how to reduce the demand of drug use by initiating programmess such as detox camps, inclusion of primary prevention programmes in the church calendars, referring them treatment and rehabilitation programmes and so on.

Neidonuo Angami, the first general secretary of Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) who is also a padmashree recipient, shared on how they initiated to fight against the menace of drug addiction in the mid 80s. She also shared on how the first treatment programme was brought to Nagaland, which was spearheaded by NMA along with Kripa Foundation.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Daniel Tep, chairman of Terogvunyu village, followed with a benediction said by Kenyüyhun Tep, pastor of Henbenji Baptist Church.
