Longleng district observes International Day of Older Persons

DIMAPUR — The Social Welfare department, Longleng district, organised International Day of Older Persons on the theme ‘Resilience of older person in a changing world,’ on October 1 at VDB hall, Longleng.

Deputy Commissioner of Longleng, Dharam Raj, the special guest of the event, in his address reminded that the day is celebrated to recognise the contributions made by senior citizens to society, as well as to inform them of their welfare status and make them aware of the benefits they should be receiving, a DIPR report stated.

“As they have greater life experience, the government recognises their contributions to society and views them as part of its history. If we ignore the contributions of some of our seniors who participated in the struggle for independence, it will never be good,” the DC said.

Raj also informed about the various welfare facilities and schemes for senior citizens and assured that since the government is responsible for funding all of these welfare programmes, elderly people should know that the government is aware of their problems.

He also expressed happiness that a large number of elderly persons had voluntarily attended the programme, despite their physical limitations.

“This helps the programme become even more effective. We offer our prayers for a long and healthy life for every senior citizen present. The Social Welfare department is also appreciated for organising such a programme,” the DC added.

Shahnyu Phom, senior supervisor, in his keynote address, said the day is observed to raise awareness of the challenges and issues faced by older persons worldwide.

He also said the day is a reminder of the need for policies and actions to support the well-being, dignity and rights of older persons, and to promote a more inclusive age-friendly world.

Older persons, with their experiences, are valuable sources of knowledge and have much to contribute towards peace, sustainable development and protecting our planet, Phom said.

On the occasion, short speeches were also delivered by Elung Phom, president of Phom Senior Citizens Forum and L Langau Chemdok, coordinator of Old Age Home, Ayolta Human Resource Society.

The department also gave senior citizen awards to P Phapen and B Angup Phom.
