Week-long traffic safety drive planned for Mokokchung
MOKOKCHUNG — The Mokokchung Traffic Cell is set to conduct a ‘traffic safety awareness week’ from September 26 to 30 with the theme ‘unity for road safety’.
For the drive, the traffic personnel have arranged an array of activities to sensitise the general public on road safety measures in the town.
SI Athangba, in charge of the traffic cell, informed that the awareness week will begin with a formal programme at the ADC planning hall, where commercial drivers and two-wheeler drivers will be sensitised on traffic safety and road safety guidelines.
Athangba said that from September 27, field awareness will be activated, in which NCC cadets from Mayangnokcha Government Higher Secondary School will be taught basic traffic rules and regulations after their regular classes, and they will also assist traffic personnel in various strategic locations in Mokokchung town.
He added that NCC cadets will be deployed in groups to learn both practical and theoretical skills, as well as to spread awareness among people in various locations.
Mentioning that the traffic cell in Mokokchung conducts surprise night MVCP with breath analysers from time to time, Athangba said that the traffic police keep a watchful eye on drunken drivers in the town.
If they are caught, they must attend the traffic cell in Mokokchung for the next 10 to 15 days to prove that they are sober while driving, he said.
Besides checking helmets, the traffic personnel also check muffler cylinders. If they are caught using unauthorised kits, they are sent to the traffic cell for immediate removal. LED lights are also seized immediately.
Athangba also mentioned that the current year has seen the most accidents, but only six have been recorded, with three people killed and many receiving serious injuries.
He blamed the majority of accidents on drunk driving.
