KOHIMA — Four-day fifth edition of Men Open Basketball Trophy (MOBT) organised by the Oriental College Kohima got underway at the college premises on Tuesday.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, chairman of D Khel Council, Pele Khezhie, has termed every player as a true athlete to showcase their skills and love for the game. He stated that basketball is a sport that brings people together. He added that it unites people under one common bond regardless of diverse backgrounds, cultures, or beliefs.

He stated that the tournament symbolises the power of unity and strength that could be derived from working together towards a common goal. He also encouraged the players to remember that the real victory lies in the spirit of sportsmanship, sense of unity, and mutual respect. He added that the tournament not only provided an excellent platform for athletes to showcase their talents but also serves as a source of inspiration for aspiring young players.

He also stated that the tournament stands as a testament to the power of sports in generating positive change. He said one learn discipline, perseverance and resilience through sports.

“These qualities extend far beyond the court and can shape into individuals capable of overcoming any struggles in life. The lessons learn from the game will definitely make a lasting impact on the lives of each participant,” he added.

He further encouraged all to celebrate the achievements, big or small, and remember that success is not solely defined by victory but also by the lessons and personal growth that come from participating in the beautiful game of basketball.

Tumben Ngullie, Head of History department at Oriental College Kohima, stated that MOBT is being organised by the college after its inception in 2018. He stated that the event is being organised with an aim to give a platform to the basketball talents, to develop and encourage excellence in sport of basketball and also to promote the spirit of sportsmanship discipline and team building among the youth.

Besides, it aim at inspiring and encouraging the youths to explore their talents and utilise them in order to achieve excellence and find their ways to earn their livelihood through this sport, Ngullie added.

Altogether, a total of ten teams including South Side Shooters, Oriental College, Stallion, Kryptonite, KVSU, Kohima Highlanders, Team Taurus, Orca, Arrow Farm, and Hard Knock are participating in the tournament.

The champion would receive cash award of INR 50,000 and runners-up a cash award of INR 30,000 while MVP would be awarded with a cash award of INR 5000.
