Dr. Moalemba Jamir spoke during the GNI workshop on ‘fact-checking through visual verification’ at PCC on August 30.

DIMAPUR — The department of Mass Communication, Patkai Christian College (Autonomous), hosted a Google News Initiative (GNI) workshop on ‘fact-checking through visual verification’ on Wednesday.

Dr. Moalemba Jamir, GNI India Training Network trainer, conducted an exercise to assess the group’s alertness in spotting fake news and stated that the world today faces the difficult task of combating the spread of fake news.

He highlighted the various characteristics (propaganda, clickbait, conspiracy theories, etc.) of fake news and the techniques (whataboutism, name-calling, emotional words, etc.) employed by people in the dissemination of fake news.

He said that visuals have become easy vehicles of mis- and disinformation due to technology, which makes it easier to create compelling, believable fake images.

“Visuals can leave a lasting impression, which can impact one’s choices and ultimately, behaviour,” he noted.

He also demonstrated the various tools available for verifying visual information, such as Google Reverse Image Search, Yandex, Tineeye, InVid, and others.

However, he added that there is “no silver bullet” for verifying photos and videos.

“It is a combination of reverse image search, smart keyword search, strong observational skills, and good old-fashioned journalism,” he said.
