Kiwi farmers from Phek undertake tour to Arunachal Pradesh
DIMAPUR — Sustainable Development Research Centre (SDRC), Chümoukedima, organised a training-cum-exposure visit to the Kiwi orchards and well-known Naara-Aaba winery at Ziro in Arunachal Pradesh from August 17 to the 20th.
An update from SDRC stated that the visit provided Kiwi farmers from Phek district with a unique opportunity to learn about the scientific commercial Kiwi cultivation and the wine production process.
It stated that the visit began with a guided tour of the Naara-Aaba winery, where the team was received by Tage Rita, founder of Naara-Aaba winery. At the winery, participants were briefed on the art of wine production, from harvesting to fermentation, ageing, bottling, and marketing.
It stated that the participants were taken to the Kiwi orchards where Taro Tatang and Mihin Tayu, chairman and secretary of Kiwi Grower Co-operative Society Ltd., Ziro, introduced them to the modern techniques of commercial Kiwi cultivation including Kiwi varieties, land preparation, nursery preparation, plantation, manuring, pruning, pest management, harvesting, grading, and marketing.
It further stated that the training-cum-exposure visit was conducted as part of the project ‘Establishment of Kiwi orchard with elite planting materials in North East India (2022-23)’ funded by NERCoRMS-NEC, Shillong, under the ministry of DoNER, Government of India.
Altogether, nine farmers and three officials led by the SDRC chairman, Dr. Mechüselie Kehie, participated in the training-cum-exposure visit.
