Locals take initiative to repair neglected road in Phek
DIMAPUR — The two villages of Losami and Losatephe repaired the PWD road (British road) leading to the district headquarters of Phek under the Phek sub-division, on August 18.
According to a press release, the two villages took on the task voluntarily in the hope of making it easier for commuters to travel along the stretch.
A dumper truck and three excavators were engaged, along with 550 locals, to complete the repair work from Losatephe village to Kabokere under Losami jurisdiction without any assistance from the concerned contractor or the government.
The release mentioned that the department had long neglected the road, and the work charge labourers were terminated in February 2021. A contract was awarded to M/S Naga Construction under the PMGSY in 2020, but due to poor workmanship and a lack of proper drainage, the 14 km blacktop road lasted only a few months, after which no renovation or repair work was carried out, causing hardship for commuters.
In this regard, the two village councils also urged the concerned department to give more attention and appoint the work charge labourers at the earliest so that the road is well maintained.
