Nagaland Congress leader congratulates Rahul Gandhi on restoration of Lok Sabha membership
Former president of Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), K Therie, on Monday congratulated Congress leader Rahul Gandhi
KOHIMA— Former president of Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), K Therie, on Monday congratulated Congress leader Rahul Gandhi hours after his disqualification as Lok Sabha membership issued on March 24 this year was revoked, terming it as a restoration of democracy.
The Lok Sabha Secretariat on Monday reinstated Gandhi’s membership three days after the Supreme Court stayed his conviction in a defamation case.
‘I believe the Supreme Court decision signifies the restoration of democracy,’ Therie told Eastern Mirror on staying the conviction against the Congress leader.
Describing the apex court’s decision as a ‘gesture of respect for the nation’, he said the public is beginning to ‘lose confidence in the Central Government and its related agencies’.
He said Gandhi’s presence in the Parliament will be beneficial for the nation considering his ‘willingness to voice against falsehood and wrongdoing’.
Taking a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he accused the saffron party of ‘exhibiting actions beyond democratic norms’ and seeking to rule the country without an opposition.
He also held the BJP responsible for the unrest in Manipur, alleging that it was planned. ‘Those who settled in India since 1950 are citizens according to the Citizenship Act of 1955, not migrants,’ he said.
Therie went on to express concern over the possibility of the ongoing turmoil in Manipur spreading to other northeastern states.
