DIMAPUR— A host of political leaders from Nagaland including Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Minister of Women Resource Development and Horticulture, Salhoutuonuo Kruse and Advisor of Industries & Commerce, Hekani Jakhalu, have condemned the May 4 incident in Manipur where two tribal women were paraded naked and their modesty outraged by a violent mob.

Taking to Twitter, the chief minister said, “The incident in Manipur is barbaric and shameful. I condemn the despicable act in the strongest terms possible. Tyranny of mob has no place in a civilized society. We are deeply pained by the series of incidents that have been happening in Manipur.”

“I urge CM @NBirenSingh and @HMOIndia Shri @AmitShah Ji to act without delay and take concrete steps to restore the trust of the people. We must protect the rights and dignity of every citizen. Peace and humanity must prevail and violence must be shunned,” Rio said.

“Innocent women and children are always the first and the most impacted victims of any conflict. We must all collectively strive for peace,” he added.

“No words can adequately describe the horrific crime that our two sisters had to endure. The justice system must ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable for their crimes,” Kruse said in her tweet.

Jakhalu in her tweet stated, “In pain to see the video going viral of women being sexually assaulted in public in #Manipur. I refuse to open the video out of respect for the victims but going crazy thinking what if it were me, my mother, my daughter. Dear sisters, we r sorry we couldn’t protect you.”
