DIPHU — The CPI (ML) Liberation, Hills Party Conference (HPC), has strongly opposed any attempt to impose the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by the central government in the tribal-dominated districts of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong.

Secretary of the CPI (ML) Liberation, HPC, Rabi Kumar Phangcho, stated while interacting with the media on Monday at the CPI (ML) Liberation, HPC office in Diphu: “Once the UCC comes into force, there will be uniform rules for all citizens regarding matters such as marriage, divorce, adoption of children, inheritance of property, and customary practises.”

He said that the imposition of the UCC would result in the elimination of the customary laws and practises of the tribal people and mentioned that the introduction of the UCC in parliament is one of the major agendas of the BJP for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

He alleged that the BJP has been using the issue of UCC in many states as a part of its anti-minority propaganda and that the party is using it as a core component of its propaganda to divert attention from real issues. He added that it is evident the BJP intends to use it as a major tool to promote its divisive Hindutva agenda.

He argued that imposing uniformity, however, would not be a solution to discrimination, inequality, or equity.

The party also strongly opposed the allocation of 18,000 bighas of land in the Borjan area of Karbi Anglong to APDCL for the installation of a solar power plant.

Phangcho commented that while most of the solar power plants are installed in areas where there is no human settlement, such as deserts, barren lands, or coastal areas, to prevent habitat loss and preserve agricultural and cultivable land, the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) has allotted the vast fertile land at Borjan area to APDCL for the solar power project. He demanded that KAAC withdraw the allotment, which was made for a small profit.

On delimitation, he pointed out that while the Chief Election Commission of India’s declaration for the delimitation of Lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies may be of great interest to the people of Assam as a whole, it has also affected West Karbi Anglong. Specifically, he said, the constituency of 20 No. Baithalangso is proposed to be divided into two newly created Legislative Assembly (LA) constituencies named Amri LA and Rongkhang LA.

As per the proposal, 18 polling stations have been reassigned to Nagaon and Morigaon districts.

Phangcho highlighted the names of the polling stations under the proposed Amri LA constituency that have been surrendered to Nagaon and Morigaon. These polling stations include Amguri LP School, Piporgaon LO School, Chinainadi LP School L/W, Chinainadi LP School R/W, Mahajon Timung LP School, Bhoksong HS, Jarthang Nala LP School, Tarchen LP School, Tumprop LP School, Punja ME School R/W, Bor Anglong LP School, Doluni LO School, Edenbari LP School, Inghin Abi LP School, Punja ME L/W, Konok Ronghang LP School, Edenbari LP School, Auguri LP School.
