Nagaland: Cataract Operation Camp concludes with 44 operations
DIMAPUR — A five-day free Cataract Operation Camp at District Hospital Peren, in which 271 patients registered, concluded on July 14. Out of the registered patients, a total of 44 operations were performed during the camp. These included 42 cataract surgeries, the excision of one Basal Cell Carcinoma, and one severe Pterygium that was causing blindness. The camp concluded without any complications.
The camp was organised by the District Health Society, Peren, in collaboration with the National Programme for Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment, Nagaland.
Dr. Hedungkiebe, Sr. Specialist, played a key role in the successful organisation of the camp. The operation team consisted of Dr. Phyantsuthung, Consultant Ophthalmology from Dist. Hospital Tuensang, who served as the main surgeon, and Dr. Lydia Ndang Sophie and Dr. Hedungkiebe as supporting surgeons. They were supported by a team of hospital staff, including three Ophthalmic Assistants.
On July 10, Keyirangding Hegui, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Peren, encouraged the patients to take advantage of this rare opportunity. He highlighted the economic impact of visual impairment on individuals and expressed gratitude to the Medical Department for providing the necessary facilities during the camp. The presence of Dr. Newete Lhomi, Associate Professor from AIIMS, New Delhi, who volunteered to assist with the operations on July 11, added to the camp’s success.
