DIMAPUR — In an unfortunate incident, a mother and her daughter were trampled to death by wild elephants on June 12 morning in Karbi Anglong bordering Nagaland.

According to sources, the victims reportedly from Yimkhiung Naga tribe were killed by marauding wild elephants, while the husband was away at the market for some work. Quoting accounts of the neighbours, the source informed that the incident happened when the mother and daughter duo was en-route to visit a nearby family house. Sources informed that their bodies were found not far from their house.

It was revealed that the family was looking after a litchi farm in Karbi Anglong, which is owned by another Naga individual. It was informed that a funeral was conducted on June 13.

It may be mentioned that in a similar incident, an 8-year-old was killed and his parents were injured in an attack by wild elephants in Assam’s Golaghat district besides damaging around 50 houses on June 12.

According to a forest department officer, the incident took place in the Shyamraipur Tea Estate near Numalihgarh town on Sunday night when a herd of wild elephants wandered into the region in a quest for food.

Man-elephant conflict is on the rise in Assam, and many lives have been lost in the last couple of years.
