Advisor of Agriculture department advocates modern technology to enhance productivity

Elaborating on the challenges faced by the farming community due climate change, the advisor of Agriculture, Mhathung Yanthan, has stressed on the need to bring about changes in cropping patterns -with scientific and improved practices to enhance productivity

DIMAPUR — Elaborating on the challenges faced by the farming community due climate change, the advisor of Agriculture, Mhathung Yanthan, has stressed on the need to bring about changes in cropping patterns by introducing crops, which are resilient to the changes, in line with scientific and improved practices to enhance productivity.

Stating that the farming community is facing huge challenges due to climate change, Yanthan insisted that it should be the responsibility of all concerned to address the challenges and evolve strategies to ensure that production system is in consonance with conservative measures.

Yanthan stated this during the coordination meeting-cum-workshop of Agriculture and allied departments held at the School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS), Nagaland University in Medziphema on May 31. The meeting was organised by the Research and Extension Cell (REC), SAS, NU, spearheaded by Prof. N Tiameren Ao, an update from SASRD stated.

In his address, Yanthan urged the participants to make agriculture attractive by focusing on farming as a business model and an enterprise and to help farmers develop the mindset of an entrepreneur.

Yanthan has encouraged the participants to build strong links and relationships through more of such meetings on a regular basis saying that such consultative workshops/ conclaves would help to identify gaps and bring about viable solutions to benefit the farmers and the state.

On the occasion, Yanthan has suggested creating a platform so that all the concerned departments and institutions would be able to interact stating that working in isolation cannot bring any effectiveness or beneficial results. He has emphasised on the need to create better marketing facilities and channels.

A compendium comprising abstracts and recommendations of all research work done in SAS from 2016 to 2022 was also released by Yanthan.

The inaugural programme was chaired by Prof. L. Daiho, dean of SASRD, NU, while an invocation prayer was said by Dr. Razouneinou Zuyie, and the welcome address was delivered by Prof. Akali Sema, pro vice chancellor of SASRD, NU.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks was pronounced by Prof. KK Jha, head of Agriculture department.

Report stated that various activities and thrust areas of the state departments of Agriculture, Horticulture, Land Resources, Soil and Water Conservation and Veterinary and Animal Husbandry as well as the various departments of School of Agricultural Sciences were highlighted during the meeting.

The coordination-cum-workshop meeting was chaired by Prof. Tongpang Longkumer, head of Agronomy department, SAS, NU.

Altogether, a total of 153 persons from the various state departments, ICAR, KVK, faculty of SAS and PhD research scholars of SAS attended the meeting. Advisor
