KOHIMA: Nagaland Governor La. Ganesan has called upon the people to pledge support to Indian Red Cross Society Nagaland (IRCSN) and build a more compassionate and resilient world.

The governor, who is also the president of IRCSN, was addressing the gathering on the occasion of World Red Cross Day observed by Nagaland branch of the voluntary humanitarian organization at Dr Imkongliba Ao Hall in Kohima on Monday, May 8.

The Red Cross has been at the forefront of humanitarian services for more than 160 years, providing assistance to victims of wars, natural disasters, and other emergencies, and helps build more resilient and sustainable communities. It works have touched the lives of millions of people around the world, and still continue to play a critical role in addressing some of the most pressing global challenges.

Speaking on this year’s theme “Everything we do comes from the heart”, Nagaland Governor said it is a powerful reminder that the Red Cross’ work is driven by compassion, empathy and kindness. This theme embodies the spirit of the organisation, which is built on the seven principles of impartiality, neutrality, humanity, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality, he added.

“We must remember that everything we do, from our personal interactions with others to our work in our communities and beyond, comes from the heart. It is through acts of kindness and generosity that we can make a positive difference in the world,” he said.

He also said that one of the most inspiring aspects of the work of the Red Cross is the role of its volunteers, who are the lifeblood of the organization, providing essential support and assistance to those in need; their work is underpinned by a deep sense of understanding of the challenges faced by the communities they serve.

‘The Red Cross Society embodies the spirit of kindness and compassion,’ he said, adding that its work is truly inspiring and serves as a powerful example of the positive impact that one can have on the world.

He also encouraged the gathering to contribute in their own capacity for humanitarian service with the Red Cross Society so that it can build a more peaceful and sustainable community to make the world a better place to live in.

Chairperson IRCSN, Abeni TCK, informed that there are more than 97 million Red Cross volunteers across the world to protect human life and to alleviate human suffering. Mentioning that IRCSN too has been part of the worldwide mission through various activities, she called upon the volunteers to follow love and kindness, and that the intention is purely to serve the people.

Highlights of the event included song presentations by Youth Red Cross from Mount Olive College, Kohima, and Junior Red Cross from Mount Sinai Higher Secondary School, Kohima, as well as a visual presentation of IRCSN activities.

World Red Cross Day is celebrated every year on May 8, marking the birth anniversary of its founder Jean Henry Dunant, who was born on May 8, 1828.
