Nagas called to rise above threats and intimidations

Dimapur: In an oblique reference to the unresolved protracted Indo-Naga political issue, advisor of Information and Public Relation and Soil and Water Conservation, Imkong L Imchen, opined that a time has come for Nagas to proclaim their rights to live in peace and progress at par with other states and not succumbed to constant threats and initmidations by anti-social elements.

Speaking at the Moatsümung festival celebration as the chief guest, organised by the Ongpangkong Senso Telongjem Dimapur (OSTD) at Senden Riju in Purana Bazaar, Dimapur, on Tuesday, Imchen disclosed that Nagas are tired of living under constant threat of violence and intimidation in the name of Naga national movement. He, therefore, advocated that a time has come for the Nagas to unite and fight their rights to live in peace.

Stating that there is an individual courage among the Ao people, Imchen however pointed out that there was a lack of collective courage among the Ao community.

According to Imchen, the signing of the Shillong Accord was nothing but a simple document of defeat and betrayal for the Naga people.

Imchen also pointed out that the Shillong Accord led to the formation of the NSCN, which later divided into many factions, causing embarrassment to the integrity and intellect of the Nagas. He has questioned the validity of the agreement between the government of India and the underground stating that all Nagas have the right to know the truth since they are all stakeholders in the matter.

Imchen also highlighted on the issue of tribalism being openly practiced in Nagaland, which according to him is an affront to the Nagas society in their efforts for a Naga nation.

Also speaking on the occasion, the advisor of Labor, Employment and Skill Development and Excise, Moatoshi Longkumer, called upon the Ao community to reflect upon themselves as an advanced tribe. Stating that the attributes as an advanced tribe was missing in various fields, Longkumer called upon his community to revive the past glory.

Dr. Jamir suggests unique model for ULB elections

Former chief minister and governor, Dr. SC Jamir, urged the state government and stakeholders to develop unique model that is appropriate for Nagaland as far as the elections for urban local bodies (ULB) is concern.

Speaking at the sideline of a programme in Dimapur, Dr. Jamir opined that Nagaland cannot simply adopt the same strategies as larger states. He has, however, urged the government and other stakeholders to develop a unique model that is appropriate for the state.

Stating that Nagaland was formed with a distinct political identity through political negotiations, Dr. Jamir felt that any model developed for ULBs in Nagaland should take this unique identity into consideration.

Jamir also reminded that the number of assembly constituencies in Nagaland was not based on its area or population but instead determined by the peculiar political situation prevailing in the state. He added that it was adjusted according to the constitutional provision that mandated a minimum of at least 60 constituencies.

Jamir, therefore, appealed to the government and all concerned parties to work together to develop a model that is appropriate for Nagaland’s distinct needs and characteristics.

Regarding issue on oil exploration in the disputed area between Assam and Nagaland, Dr. Jamir, in his personal opinion, expressed that it would be best to wait for a final political settlement. Jamir was of the view that the state government should exercise patience and wait for the settlement so that a system could be worked out where both Assam and Nagaland have their own oil fields.
