Complete list of Indian movies in Oscars 2023 contention list: RRR, The Kashmir Files, Kantara, Rocketry, and more

Bengaluru, Jan. 10 (EMN): As many 10 Indian movies, including Kannada blockbuster “Kantara”, “RRR”, “The Kashmir Files”, “Rocketry” and “Gangubai Kathiawadi” have made it to the Oscars 2023 contention list.

While being included in the list is a significant step towards being nominated for the Oscars, it doesn’t guarantee selection as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science will announce the official nominations for the 95th Academy Awards from among 301 films across the world on January 24 before declaring the winners at a ceremony on March 12.

Here is complete list of Indian movies that have made it to the Oscars 2023 contention list:

Besides SS Rajamouli’s “RRR” (an abbreviation of Rajamouli, Ram Charan, and Rama Rao), Vivek Agnihotri’s “The Kashmir Files, R Madhavan’s “Rocketry”, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Gangubai Kathiawadi” and Rishab Shetty’s “Kantara”, seven other Indian movies namely “Iravin Nizhal”, “Me Vasantrao”, “The Next Morning”, “Vikrant Rona”, and “Chhello Show” are eligible for a nomination at the Oscars 2023.

Meanwhile, the director of Kannada blockbuster “Kantara”, Rishab Shetty, has expressed his happiness over the action thriller qualifying for Oscars nomination in two categories — Best Picture and Best Actor.

“We are overjoyed to share that ‘Kantara’ has received 2 Oscar qualifications! A heartfelt thank you to all who have supported us. We look forward to share this journey ahead with all of your support. Can’t wait to see it shine at the #Oscars #Kantara @hombalefilms #HombaleFilms,” tweeted the director-turned actor.

Producer Vijay Kiragandur of the Hombale Films also expressed joy over the development and thanked everyone for their support.

“Kantara” is about a Kambala champion, who is at loggerheads with an upright forest officer. Besides playing the lead role along with Sapthami Gowda, Shetty wrote and directed the movie. Made with a medium budget of INR 16 crore, the action thriller flick has collected more than INR 400 crore at the worldwide box office.

It may be mentioned that 95th Academy Awards is scheduled to be held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, on March 12. As many as 9,579 members will cast their votes between January 12 and 17 to choose the winners of various categories.
