Wild elephants kill one person in Wokha, DC issues advisory
Dimapur, Nov. 5 (EMN): The Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, Ajit Kumar Ranjan, has issued an advisory cautioning the public about a herd of wild elephants loitering around in Amboto New Village area under Changpang circle in Wokha district.
The Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) of Changpang had mentioned in a report to the DC that a 21-year-old man from Khakuthato village was killed after some wild elephants turned rogue and attacked the people on November 3, according to the update.
It was informed that the police reached the spot of the incident at around 6:00 pm and carried out necessary formalities.
The DC advised the public and neighbouring villages not to resort to any provocative or aggressive means like firing, use of weapons or crowds to chase off the jumbos, saying that it could “cause aggressive response from the wild elephants thereby aggravating the risk/threat to life and property”.
The EAC had updated the DC that necessary instructions had been issued to the village leaders for caution and to keep clear from provocating the wild elephants, remain vigil and keep updating on the matter.
It added that police and Forest department had been informed to be on active standby.
“Staff from Wildlife Crime Control Unit will be visiting the affected area very soon to take stock of the situation and carry out certain field exercises to map the entire area of conflict (Human and Elephant conflict) to make/take mitigate measures,” read the advisory.
