Education key to unlock golden doors, says Governor

Dimapur, Sep. 29 (EMN): Nagaland Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi on Thursday said education is the key to unlock the golden doors of development and that educated and empowered women are a powerful tool to ensure increased participation in the progress and development of the nation.

The Governor was addressing the annual function-cum-31st fresher’s social of Pranabananda Women’s College (PWC), Dimapur held on the theme ‘Knowledge with dignity’ at the college premises.

He also quoted late Jawaharlal Nehru who once said, “If you educate a man, you educate an individual, however, if you educate a woman you educate a whole family.”

“Women empowered means Mother India empowered,” said Mukhi and lauded the teachers of the college for their efforts in empowering women through quality education and raising their capacity to contribute to society.

Mukhi said the admirable academic performance of the college and the increase in enrolment of students currently at 657 with 33 faculty members and 21 non-teaching staff bears testament to the success story of the college.

“But more importantly, the true fruit is when one sees empowered, intelligent women saturated in good values and ethics stepping out, confident and ready to face the challenges and make their marks in the world,” the governor said.

Mukhi also underscored that education is more than honorary degrees and diplomas: it is the sum total of the knowledge, skills, attitudes, principles and values that they acquire over the course of their lifetime.

“The primary objective of our educational system has to imbue receptive minds with wholesome habits, philosophies and practices, integrity, honesty, decency, respect, compassion, and zeal for hard work if we are to have any chance of producing individuals that we want and need to lead this country into the future,” he said.

He exhorted the students to have a vision and that once decided they must have the conviction to achieve it. And with strong willpower and hard work, they will succeed, he added.

“In our country, women constitute 48% of the total population and nowadays women are entering in every field and the opportunities are limitless unlike earlier days,” the governor said.

Mukhi further said that an effective education system is defined as one that prepares the youth to navigate the journey of life meaningfully and that schools constitute the basic pillars of the education edifice of a nation.

In a rapidly changing and a technologically-driven world, students need to absorb and quickly comprehend streams of new information and therefore they need to be independent learners and problem solvers, he added.

On the occasion, Mukhi presented the Governor’s Award (Syama Prasad Mukherjee) to K Neeha Chanu (commerce) in the field of excellence for academic; Governor’s Award (Kamla Devi Chattopadhyay) to Sushmita Deb in the field of social responsibility; Governor’s Award (Deen Dayal Upadhyaya) to Sharmila Sharma (arts stream) in the field of extracurricular activities and best library user award to Phalneikim, BA 5th semester.

Earlier, the chief guest also released the ‘Pranab Vision’ college magazine.
